On Taylor Swift’s Fifteen

On Taylor Swift’s Fifteen

A long time ago, I wrote some crap about Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen.” I think I deleted it from my Notes on Facebook. Whatever. It wasn’t deep. But I didn’t think much of this song again, until last night when I was on my way to hear my friend Wendy Willis read some poems.

Then I got kinda mad. (Not about the poems. They are beautiful!)

The reason is this lyric:

Abigail gave everything she had
To a boy who changed his mind
And we both cried

When you ‘lose’ your virginity, you also gain something, even if it’s a shoulder-shrug or an awful lesson. In any case, when you pass from inexperience into knowledge, there’s no way you’re left with a deficit.

But mostly? I just want to say this: your virginity is in no way ‘everything you have.’ Not by a long shot. Not even close.
