This One Time? In France?

This One Time? In France?

See this house? This house is in the mountains near Pontaix, France. Which is near, Die, France. Which is where we were the last week.

It is over 400 years old and was abandoned by the original owner when the Nazi army came to occupy it as a soldier’s quarters. Though his brother’s house is across the valley and the brother continued to live there until he died a few years back, the original owner of this house never came back. Perhaps all that German stank just pissed this man off? Or some other thing in the war killed him? Or maybe he was in the Resistance and blew up bridges on orders from codes hidden in lipstick cases? (Yes, I read Elizabeth Wein’s Code Name Verity while I was there.)

I should probably get the whole story.

Whatever the case, Adrian’s grandfather bought this house in Pontaix, France several decades ago and that is where Adrian and his family spent many summers ever since.

The photo below? That was how we ate when we were not swimming.

Mostly, we were swimming. Or contemplating swimming.

I read a lot. I talked with my family. I walked and ran a bit in the mountains. Everyone played cards and Quirkle. We laughed a whole bunch. I don’t know any French, so I tried to avoid the actual people who live in France.

One day we went to Avignon and I bought a dress and we saw a castle that some Popes lived in. Dee dee dee, who cares.

My intention is to never discuss this in full. People’s vacation narratives tend send me into a coma and I can’t decide if it’s because I don’t like traveling or they are bad story-tellers.

I took about ten pictures on my phone, because I’m terrible at photography. And most of them are bad.

I can’t wait to see you, too, Ela!

Maybe just post a few choice pictures and don’t say anything, or just tell a few choice stories. Your pictures here did say a lot, looks like an awesome destination even if it took xanax to get you there.
Can’t wait to see you next week!
