We Heart YA: On Beauty (Part 1)

Great post on the appearance of characters in YA – something that drives me nuts and yet is important to me. I like the idea of handsome characters, I’ll admit (especially if I have to read about their naked hijinks with others), but the idea that they don’t realize they’re good-looking or use their potential they have to box their weight in the looks department is so unbelievable that it gets in the way of enjoying other aspects of a story.

Anyway, go read this, including the comments!

Me, either, Meagan! It sounds like we’re both lookist assholes.

Love that We Heart YA used the Incarceron example. Fun read that was. I think the best writers understand that “appealing” or “provocative” main characters don’t have to be hot in all the cliche ways. But to be fair, I’m not sure I’d be on board with “running my fingers through his greasy hair while I smell his stinky tennis shoes and kiss his pimply face.” Just keeping it real.
